Captain Steve (J.R.) Ellis has lived in Port Isabel, Texas and fished the waters of the Lower Laguna Madre since 1974. Over the years, Steve has been featured in many local, state and national magazines and television shows. A pioneer of shallow-water, sight-casting in the Lower Laguna, Steve has guided hundreds of anglers to trophy fish in these gin-clear waters.
While aboard Steve's custom-built 18 foot Flats Fisher, clients have access to top of the line tackle, in addition to his wealth of shallow water fishing knowledge. The belief that quality tackle increases success led Steve to fish only All-Star spinning and casting rods, Shimano reels and Orvis fly equipment.
As his Mercury outboard propels you towards the destination of choice, Steve shares some of his expertise and outlines a game-plan for the day. Once in place, Steve masterfully works the pushpole to ensure his clients are always in the best position to cast to fish.
Although Steve encourages angles of all ages and skill levels to participate in the sport, his charters are geared to more skilled anglers. In order to gain the maximum benefit from an outing with Steve, it is necessary to have accurate casting skills and a good understanding of saltwater angling in general.
While this style of fishing may not be for everyone, those who have the patience, skills and will to catch trophy speckled trout, redfish and snook in one of the most beautiful settings on the Gulf coast are well served to fish with Steve. His ability to find fish and instruct anglers in the nuances of shallow-water sight-casting are unmatched.
